May 22, 2008 Exercise No CommentsPlayed basketball at lunch.
4-wheeling in PA for the day. Rode ~60 miles and was sore from holding onto the atv with my legs and some hard steering.
Shins are sore to the touch. Didn’t run this morning. Probably won’t run tonight. Some other cardio perhaps.

Softball game. Out at first once. One RBI the 2nd at bat. Errors in the field. Not my best. Shins were hurting a lot. At this point I’m pretty sure that it’s the sprints in my cleats that are hurting my shins and not the running with jogging shoes. I only have about 75 miles on my running shoes. They shouldn’t have been worn out yet. They were fitted to my feet when I bought them (video of my stride and all that when i bought them) and haven’t ever had any problems until i started doing softball.
Might try some gel inserts for them to see if that helps with the shins.
New running plan. Still get bad side aches but run through them for a bit until I can’t breath. Trying intervals again but with running at 5mph and then walking. The run feels more comfortable in pace but kicks my ass and makes it hard to breath.
Shins have been hurting though (as well as lower back). Need to get new shoes I’m thinking.

2 mile walk at Ivy Creek Natural Area. Took pictures - slow walking.
Montpelier Wine Festival. Spent most of the day walking around in the sun and drinking wine. Even got some sunburn.
Softball game. Sprinting from base to base. Got home this time. Batting average so far is 1.000. I can definitely feel that it’s a different type of running for a couple days afterwards though.
No exercise this morning. Probably no exercise tonight. Not sure about tomorrow.
The whole thing has been getting very frustrating and hard to do lately. I haven’t made any progress since I finished the Couch to 5K program. I can run for about 25-30 minutes depending on the day. It’s about 1.86 miles. I can’t run faster or longer without getting shin pain or intense chest pain. It’s not the best feeling either way. Bike riding is alright though my distance there isn’t much better.
All together I feel like I’ve hit the end of my ability with running since I haven’t found much reference online for the large guy who’s trying to run. Most of the people I know that run are fairly athletic (or small enough already) and their advice doesn’t apply very well (trying to do faster intervals with slower running left me standing on the side of the road wheezing and dizzy). I’m frustrated, the same weight I was a month ago and unable to do anything more than I was doing then.
Oh, and my Dr. appointments about my weight loss aren’t covered by my insurance I found out after the 2nd visit. They only pay for obesity when you’re getting a gastric bypass. Other than that… the recommendation seems to be to just get bigger until they can cut some of it out or I’m on my own.
